Humanoid Robots

Joint frames, gears and bearing cages in PEEK — the material that makes weight reduction possible.

THE CHALLENGE

Why this application is a material problem

Humanoid robot joints need stiffness, fatigue resistance and low weight at the same time. PEEK's specific strength is roughly eight times that of aluminium at half the density, so carbon-fibre reinforced PEEK parts routinely cut 40 % of the weight of the aluminium part they replace — while removing machining and surface treatment from the process chain.
